• Joe Vasconcellos performed a song composed for the occasion
Verbo America, the mythical work of artist Roberto Matta (1911-2002), is again available to the public: yesterday, Wednesday, June 18th, metro station Quinta Normal inaugurated the installation, which will allow citizens of Santiago to view once again, and on a daily basis, this impressive creation. The ceremony included appearances by important guests, and a performance by Joe Vasconcellos who, together with James Frazier, composed a song called “Verbo America, una constelacion,” written for the occasion.
Verbo America is one of the most important of Roberto Matta’s works. In its conception, the artist wanted to merge the past and future of the American continent, to reunite “the Indians of the Mediterranean with the indigenous of America and the Pacific, to extract the traditional Mediterranean culture, the juices of time…”
In this way the work, historically defined as an “instrument of memories, mythical torment and cosmic marriage,” projects the syncretism generated by the coexistence of the cultures of America, “a world so young it seems like a hiding place.”
The inauguration of Verbo America in Santiago yesterday was attended by several high authorities, and included a multi-disciplinary artistic presentation. The performances integrated engaging visual projections and dance, and was crowed with a show by Joe Vasconcellos, who sang the aforementioned song inspired by the painter and his vision of the American continent.
Joe Vasconsellos has integrated many different styles from across the continent in his work, developing a regional language all his own. He connected profoundly with Matta’s undertaking, and he achieved a natural interpretation of the sentiment by converting it into song. Of the experience of developing the work inspired by Matta’s art, Vasconcellos commented:
“Along the pathway of art you come across this kind of wonderful situation. Every once in a while a painter will tell me: ‘I listen to your music to get inspired,’ but here it was the opposite…I had the challenge of appreciating the work of another artist, and to compose from the starting point of that inspiration. The creation flowed very naturally and organically, but for the situation—Santiago, 2008—I felt it necessary to give the song a more modern treatment: I turned that part over to Jimmy Frazier. We worked together looking at the painting, both coming up with idea, everything transferred to the computer and, in the end, it seemed like a good idea to attempt that… to fuse the organic with the technological. If you think about it, it’s a painting by Matta in a metro station, and the music had to have sounds that evoked that, the station, the metro… and at the same time the solemnity projected by a painting that is so…overwhelming. The constellation comes up because I think that when people look at the painting that’s what they will see: constellations…endless constellations.”

INSTALACIÓN DE VERBO AMÉRICA, DE ROBERTO MATTA, FUE INAUGURADA EN METRO QUINTA NORMAL
• En la ceremonia Joe Vasconcellos interpretó un tema compuesta para la oportunidad.
Verbo América, la mítica obra del artista Roberto Matta (1911–2002), ha vuelto a estar disponible para el público: el miércoles 18 de junio, se inauguró en la Estación del Metro Quinta Normal, la instalación que permitirá a los habitantes de Santiago, presenciar diaria y nuevamente, esta imponente creación. La ceremonia contó con la presencia de importantes invitados y con la participación de Joe Vasconcellos, quién compuso junto a James Frazier un tema llamado “UNA CONSTELACIÓN – VERBO AMERICA”, escrito para la ocasión.
Verbo América es una de las obras más importantes realizadas por Roberto Matta. Al concebirla, el autor se planteó fundir pasado y futuro del continente americano, reunir a “los indios del Mediterráneo con los indígenas de América y del Pacífico, estrujar la cultura tradicional del Mediterráneo, los jugos del tiempo”…( )
De esta manera la obra, históricamente definida como un “aparato de recuerdos, tormento mítico y matrimonio cósmico” proyecta el sincretismo generado a partir de la convivencia de las culturas de América, “un mundo tan reciente que parece escondrijo”.
El miércoles 18 de junio se realizó la inauguración de Verbo América en Santiago. Esta contó con la presencia de altas autoridades e incluyó una presentación artística multi disciplinaria. La presentación integró elegantes proyecciones visuales, danza y fue coronada con la intervención de Joe Vasconcellos. El músico presentó el tema referido, inspirado en la obra del artista y en la visión sobre el continente americano.
Joe Vasconcellos ha integrado en su trabajo diversos estilos del continente, desarrollando así un lenguaje propio y regional. El músico se conectó profundamente con la propuesta del pintor y logró, en forma natural, interpretar dicho sentimiento y convertirlo en canción, tema que fue bien recibido por el público y que quienes lo deseen, podrán, a partir de hoy, bajar y escuchar a través del sitio web del metro, dirección:

Sobre la experiencia de haber trabajado inspirado en la obra de Matta, Vasconcellos comenta:
“En este camino del arte se dan estas situaciones maravillosas. Cada cierto tiempo ocurre que un pintor me dice: yo oigo tu música para inspirarme, pero aquí fue al revés…surgió el desafío de apreciar yo la obra de otro artista, para inspirarme en ella y a partir de eso, componer. La creación fluyó de forma muy natural y orgánica, pero, para la situación- Santiago, 2008 – sentí necesario darle al tema un tratamiento moderno: eso lo proporcionó Jimmy Frazier. Trabajamos juntos mirando el cuadro, ambos proponíamos ideas, todo esto se plasmaba en el computador y en fin, me pareció que venia bien atreverse a eso…a fundir orgánica y tecnología. Si lo piensas, es un cuadro de Matta en una Estación de metro, la música tenia que tener sonidos que evocaran eso, metro, estación…y a la vez la solemnidad que proyecta un cuadro que resulta…avasallador. Lo de la constelación surge porque creo que cuando la gente mire el cuadro va a ver eso: constelaciones…infinitas”
